Solution for Steel Industry

Overview
One of the largest steel producers in the world relies heavily on overhead cranes at their steel melts plants. These crane operations in harsh, high temperature environment where optical systems such as laser range finder systems or typical wireless technologies often fails. The mean time to repair (MTTR) for these optical sensor is high and their complexity makes identifying faults and downtime a time consuming task. As steel product increases tolerance for costly steel yard crane maintenance downtime decreases.
Then there is the issue of worker safety. The operator often faces dangerous scenarios when operating bridge cranes properly. And working crews regularly visit the yards for manual stock updates that result in accidents, injuries and fatalities.
Solution
Dynalog India provides the most rugged 13.3” Tablet PC M133W to the Steel Industry. This tablet has powerful 5GHz 802.11 ac LAN connectivity and high resolution display. The fan less tablet delivers an excellent performance. The TAB is designed with high resolution screen to display high quality images. Also, it has Wave 1 type high speed WLAN connectivity which helps to communicate with CC Cameras as well as Access point without any data loss.
In first installations the Tablet was mounted in overhead crane cabin with VESA mount so that the operator can visualise the movement and position of the ladle. But later in new systems the cranes are fully automated, there is no operator cabin. The tablet is mounted in the control room in the yard. The application software has been deployed in the Radar Controller in such a way that it calculates X-Y positioning of crane and gives commands to the high resolution CC Cameras to capture the images and send it to Tablet via Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. Total four cameras have been mounted on the field. Once the ladle passes from first camera, it captures the image and send to a Tablet. When it is about to come in front of next camera the first camera gets off. The procedure goes on repeating for third and fourth camera. The Camera On/Off is controlled by a Radar. The entire system contains the Radar system for the cloud, Access Point for WLAN connectivity, cameras for capturing images of crane hook holding position of Ladle (filled with a melted metal) weighing 300+ tonnes.
Result
After 18 months of successful installations in two steel melting yards in India, these systems are now deployed on crane handling liquid hot metals without a single reported failure.Operational managers are now able to focus more on steel stockyard productivity rather than continuously worrying about crane asset maintenance and scheduling.Labour cost has been reduced as before implementation the total 8 to 10 people required to handle the activity.
