Discover the essential guide for instrumentation professionals with Instrumentation Reliability: Users' Perspective by Dr. Kartik Fojdar. This book offers practical insights, proven methodologies, and valuable advice for ensuring reliable instrumentation systems in process industries. Recommended by Dr. B R Mehta, it bridges the gap between design concepts and real-world reliability challenges.
The book is written to convey a message to designers/OEMs that develop and supply the control systems to process industries – Dr B R Mehta.
Instrumentation Reliability: Users' Perspective by Dr Kartik Fojdar is described as a ‘must have’ book for instrumentation professionals. The book, written out of personal experience, is full of practical insights and proven methodologies to ensure reliable instrumentation systems in process industries and is a valuable resource for engineers, designers, and OEMs.
In the Preface, the author mentions that ‘Instrumentation Reliability’ is a very tricky expression. Many times, engineers use reliability, availability, safety, and integrity concepts in the wrong context. These concepts have different meanings in different contexts. Sometimes they have conflicting objectives. That is why it is important that these concepts are understood in the right perspective.
When instrumentation system designers design a system, they have one concept in mind. For example, safety system designers have a ‘safety’ focus but when a system is designed only with one concept, other concepts are neglected. Reliability of the system is a comprehensive concept, and it’s related to the business bottom line of the process plant.
Hence, real reliability of the system is achieved only when interrelationships between the above-mentioned concepts are understood and the same are taken care of in design.
In the Foreword, Dr B R Mehta, former Senior Vice President (Projects), RIL, writes that Dr Kartik Fojdar, an Electronics Engineer by qualification, has impressive credentials. He is currently Senior Vice President and Head of Centre of Excellence (CoE) – Engineering (Instrumentation) in Reliance Industries Ltd. He has a total of 37 years of professional experience. He has worked in all areas of instrumentation like execution of grassroots projects, maintenance and reliability/central engineering services. He led the execution of mega grassroots projects like ROGC and down-stream plants, gasification, and subsequently headed the Central Engineering Services for Jamnagar sites’ cluster.
In addition to core domain, he significantly contributed to other domains like process safety management (PSM), competency development and training of engineers, business processes and systems. He was FOPE (training scheme for fresh engineers) Director for Dahej site. He was part of various developmental centres for RIL sites for soft competency assessment, contributed as MR for IMS at Dahej site, and was Site BT (business transformation) Director for Dahej site. He is certified lead auditor for ISO9001 and ISO14001. He was accredited as CMRE (Certified maintenance and reliability professional) by SMRP. He is certified human competency assessor by CCMC.
He has conducted numerous training programs for engineers on topics like Governor control, anti-surge control, Quality management system, etc. He has presented papers in international conferences and participated in panel discussions in international conferences.
The book is written for conveying messages to designers/OEMs that develop and supply the control systems to process industries. I have rarely seen users' expectations voiced in such simple and clear terms. These expectations are rooted to and aligned with business goals of process industries. Availability and safety are explained very lucidly and without using any management jargon which conveys the message very effectively and convincingly. Importance of understanding conflicting goals and their interaction is discussed at length so that an optimised and balanced approach is taken while designing and implementing the systems.
The author has also used his vast experience to explain unique methodology for identifying certain design bugs and redundancy breaks at the detailed engineering stage itself so that long term reliability is achieved. This is unique in nature. Though the author is open to using new technologies, he has rightly cautioned, based on his experience, that while doing so, reliability should not be compromised.
Dr B R Mehta recommends this book to all designers, OEM engineers and users’ engineers for getting desired insight into instrumentation reliability from users’ perspective.
